Are you planning an active holiday for the whole family? Then the Isar cycle path in the heart of Bavaria is the right destination for you! The whole family can cycle through the imposing mountains in Southern Germany as you travel along the glacier-green Isar. One thing is guaranteed: the kids will not be bored! In addition to the second largest lake in Bavaria, Lake Starnberg, you can also admire the highest mountain in the region – the Zugspitze.

ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Ambach/Bernried by lake Starnberg

The travel documents and the rental bikes (if booked) are in your start hotel.

It is recommended to arrive early. This metropolis on the Danube has plenty to offer and it is worth to stay there for a longer time. Enjoy a cup of coffee and the typical Vienna cake Sachertorte in one of the numerous coffee houses or treat yourself to a roundtrip with the horse-drawn cab Fiaker.

Fresh and raring to go, you will start your cycle tour in Bavaria along the edge of lake Starnberg. Then you will continue cycling through the nature protection area “Osterseen” (Easter lakes) where 19 small lakes form a unique highland moor area. A true free time paradise, which invites you to go for a swim. Next, you cycle past one of Bavaria’s warmest lakes – the lake Froschhauser and then you will arrive in Murnau. There is enough time for you to have a look at one of the museums or to wonder through the colourful old town.

The first distance of your bike trip guides you through the national park Donau-Auen. There you will get to know the diversity of the flora and fauna as well as the manifold types of landscape. You pass the castle Orth and the village Eckertsau and reach Bad Deutsch Altenburg. There you can make an excursion on the Roman bike trail (Römerweg) to Carnuntum. The archaeological park is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological sites in Austria. After Hainburg you reach the border to Slovakia and its capital city Bratislava that is your next overnight stay.
You will soon reach Austrian territory. First you cycle through the Sauwald region to Engelhartszell, where the only trappist monastery of Austria invites you to a liqueur tasting. Then the route guides you through the nature reserve Donauleiten, from where you reach the Schlögen Bend. This is where granite proved to be too much of an opponent and forced the Danube to change directions by 180 degrees. This natural spectacle will inspire you!

Today you cycle through central Europe’s largest moorland area – the nature protection area “Murnauer Moos”. Whether you take the barefoot trail or the moorland educational trail: it is exciting for both young and old. Then you follow the river Loisach until you get to Garmisch Partenkirchen. But before you get to where you will be staying tonight, it is worth taking a detour to Farchant to go along the forest discovery track and see the Kuhflucht cascades. A great destination for both children and friends of nature.

Enjoy a view of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. Then you set off! Along today’s stage there are lots of opportunities for a quick swim or cooling off in one of the refreshing mountain lakes. Take a detour to the adventure play area in Krün until you get and then continue your way along the crystal-clear turquoise blue water until you get to the centre of Fall.

Today you will leave the picturesque lake Sylvenstein and continue your way. You will cross mighty dam walls and cycle along the river Isar via Lenggries to Bad Tölz. Water lovers swim in the between times in natural outdoor pools or in fun pools. Nature friends explore the nature discovery trail along the Isar and climbers visit the high ropes park in Isarwinkel. At the end of the stage, you will arrive in Bad Tölz, which spreads its Bavarian charm with its historical market road.

After breakfast you will start with a train ride from Györ to Komárom. Today´s route runs near riverbanks in the flat Danube valley. In the course of this you pass different villages and while cycling you can view the vineyards in the background. The sporty bikers can choose a route over Tata but there are some increases. This requires a basic level of fitness. Those interested in history should plan time for the Roman castle Kelemantia which is on the way. However, the absolute highlight is your destination today: Esztergom (also known as Hungarian Rome). It´sbasilica is the largest church of the country.

At the end of your cycle tour, you head back to the second largest lake in Bavaria. If you haven’t already, you should take a break in a shady beer garden today and try out the regional Bavarian food. Once you have arrived at the lake side, you can relax wonderfully. Take a boat ride across the lake or enjoy one of the tasty homemade pastries in one of the many cafes. Maybe you will spot one of the celebs that often head to lake Starnberg.

You cycle along the ‘Donauknie’ which is probably one of the most attractive sections of the Danube bike trail. The Royal Palace and the castle of Visegrád will delight you and the open air museum as well as the baroque old town of Szentendre invites you to stay. A boat trip to Budapest is the crowning event of this day. After arriving there you can review all impressions of this wonderful bike trip during a walk through the city.

Today it is time to say goodbye to the hospitality and Bavaria’s slackness. Or maybe you would like to stay one day longer and explore the area?

Today marks the sob worthy conclusion of our time going deep on Europe’s most budding cultural cities. With a newfound appreciation for the less travelled spots, we’ll say goodbye & make plans for our next worldly ventures.
