Schengen visa for a cycling holiday: a checklist for Indian travellers

All our European tours need a Schengen short-stay visa. The process is simple once you know what’s needed. Here’s the checklist we give our own riders.

1. Apply to the right country

You apply to the country where you’ll spend the most nights. If the nights are equal, you apply to the country you enter first.

  • Rome Christmas & Sicily: all nights are in Italy, so you apply to Italy.
  • Prague → Dresden: five nights are in the Czech Republic and three in Germany, so you apply to the Czech Republic.

We’ll confirm the right country for your booking.

2. Apply at the right time

You can apply up to six months before you travel and no later than 15 days before. We recommend applying 6–8 weeks ahead, and earlier for December, when appointment slots fill quickly. Book your appointment as soon as your tour is confirmed.

3. Check your passport

  • Issued within the last 10 years
  • Valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area
  • At least two blank pages

4. Gather your documents

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Two recent passport-size photos to Schengen specifications (white background)
  • Return flight booking or reservation
  • Hotel confirmations for every night. We provide these along with the day-by-day itinerary.
  • Travel insurance that meets the Schengen minimum medical cover (about ₹32 lakh), valid in all Schengen countries for your whole trip. Any good travel insurer in India offers a Schengen-compliant policy.
  • Bank statements, usually for the last six months, and recent income tax returns
  • Proof of employment: a leave letter and salary slips, or business registration if you’re self-employed
  • A short cover letter explaining your trip

Requirements can differ slightly between countries and visa centres, so always check the current list on the official visa centre website for your country of application.

5. Fees and biometrics

You pay a visa fee plus a service fee to the visa centre. Check the current amounts on the official visa centre website when you book your appointment, as they change from time to time. At your appointment you’ll give fingerprints and a photo. You may also be asked for fingerprints and a photo at the border when you first enter Europe, under the EU’s Entry/Exit System.

How CYC Traveller helps

Once you book, we send you the itinerary, hotel confirmations and a trip summary for your cover letter, and help you check your file before your appointment. The visa fee and travel insurance are paid by you and aren’t part of the tour price.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Visa rules can change, and the final decision always rests with the consulate.
